Please note that flight prices, hotel availability, and temperature information are based on dates in June 2018.

Croatia is a beautiful place to honeymoon with your significant other and especially if you don’t want to spend a fortune. Many of the accommodation options we found were less than £100 a night and even more so if you opt for an Airbnb, which you will find are the cheapest accommodation options throughout our list. Now, if you are a Game of Thrones fan, you probably already know that after filming in Mdina, Malta (another country on this list), the producers found Dubrovnik, and filmed much of the series’ in Croatia. Dubrovnik is a coastal city that houses enormous 16th-century walls that encompass Gothic and Renaissance buildings in the Old Town. Zagreb, the capital, is similarly distinguished by the medieval upper town. Aside from its historical architecture and diverse museums, Croatia has a long coastline on the Adriatic Sea as well as encompassing over 1000 islands, which can only mean one thing; scenic views, beautiful beaches, and stunning turquoise waters.

What To Do

In many ways, Croatia seems to be a museum in and of itself so we are certain that no person would get bored of exploring the city they decide to visit. From the historical architecture, the diverse museums, and the beautiful coastlines, there is a lot to see and explore. However, should you and your significant other get the urge to see more, you can rent a car* and explore Croatia at your own freedom and leisure. There is nothing more exciting, or perhaps romantic, than exploring an unknown land with the person you have just vowed to spend the rest of your life with. If you are a Game of Thrones couple, you could visit Dubrovnik and the sites where the series was filmed. Croatia is also home to some delicious foods that you must try while visiting – such as, Tartufi (truffles), Sir (Croatian cheese), Strukli, and Brudet. With its longwinding coastline, you can also expect to try some top quality seafood.

A lot of people do not know that Budapest is made up of two cities – quite literally, Buda and Pest. The hilly Buda side is separated from the flat Pest by the River Danube. It is a city with a unique atmosphere, an ever-growing nightlife, and an exceptional classical music scene. Like a lot of European cities, Budapest offers you culture and enchantment without breaking the bank. With flights starting from only £100 per person, and Airbnb’s that offer a whole apartment for £39 per night, Budapest is a honeymoon force to reckon with. It is especially suitable for couples who enjoy exploring on foot as it is a city that is pedestrian-friendly and full of hidden gems.

What To Do

For the couples who love walking, Budapest was made for you and your walking tours can be tweaked for your personal interests. Take long romantic walks along the banks of the River Danube or the Chain Bridge – head over to Fisherman’s Bastion on the Buda side of the river to get scenic views of Pest. The mansion filled Andrassy Avenue is perfect for a dreamy stroll to get close to the city and each other. Budapest is also home to Vaci Street – a famous pedestrian-only street – which has an abundance of cafes, designer boutiques, and restaurants. Aside from exploring the city on foot, you can also explore using your senses by catching an unforgettable performance at the opera house.

Of course, one of Budapest’s main attractions that must not be forgotten are their thermal baths which are popular with visitors all year long. The coolest thermal bath is 27 degrees which means it doesn’t matter which time of the year you decide to visit, you can enjoy a hot bath outside. One of the best is Széchenyi, a Neo-baroque building that has both indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna, and steam rooms. Have a romantic spa day and then head over to Café Ruszwurm (the only one to survive the world wars) and eat their famous seven layer cake.

Porto is a city on the coast of northwest Portugal that is mostly famous for two things: its impressive bridges and the production of port wine. It is a city with a lot of character, distinguished by its long winding cobbled streets, Azulejo tiled buildings, and the Porto Wine Lodges. There is much to see, do and eat, which makes it a perfect honeymoon destination for those on a budget.

What To Do

There is an abundance of things to explore in Porto that it’s almost difficult to know where to start. However, in our experience, it’s always better to start with food. So, visit a market, pack a delicious lunch, and head over to one of Porto’s many beautiful terraced gardens to have a picnic that overlooks unmatchable views of the city. Afterwards you can experience the Torre dos Clerigos or the Livaria Lello, one of the most gorgeous bookstores in the world that has become one of Porto’s attractions as it is known that JK Rowling loved to go here when she lived in Porto. It is a beautiful building that is constantly busy and even has an entry fee – it’s worth a visit.

Porto is a city famous for wine and thus, it makes perfect sense to visit a wine cellar and see where this famous drink gets made – while also having a taste . . . or two. Why not dedicate the whole day to food and drink? Visit the Ribeira neighbourhood which is lined with many cafes and restaurants that serve delicious food, pastries, and wine. Not only can you both enjoy a delicious meal, a hot coffee coupled with a tasty pastry, or enjoy a glass of beer or wine on the terraces, but you can do all this while taking in remarkable views of Porto.

We could talk all day about Porto’s attractions but, to sum it up, do what makes you both happy. Visit the beach, admire the Azulejo tiling of Estacao Sao Bento, take a honeymoon selfie at the top of the Dom Luis I Bridge, have a coffee at the Café Majestic; whatever you do, it is guaranteed to be magical.

Mallorca is an island definitely worth visiting and that is also the case for couples on their honeymoon. It is an island with some of the most beautiful beaches and the most bluest turquoise waters in Europe. For couples who want to lay on the beach, eat good food, and simply relax, Mallorca is the place for you. Visiting in the July/August peak season may prove to be too busy for a honeymoon but, June is perfect for a quieter atmosphere.

What To Do

Mallorca has many points of interest that are worth visiting. In Palma De Mallorca, the capital, there is the circular Bellver Castle which is deemed to be a Gothic masterpiece. Afterwards, you can head over to Santa Maria cathedral, better known as La Seu – make sure to get inside to admire the interior of the cathedral. Palma, in itself, is worth taking time to explore – especially for those who want to shop while on their honeymoon.

However, if you are more interested in being a beach bum, lay back on the warm sand at one of the endless beaches in Mallorca – Santa Ponsa has a particularly pretty one. In Santanyi, you will find Mondrago Natural Park that caters to any type of visitor. There are options to walk, birdwatch the 70 species that float around the area, and it is even home to one of Mallorca’s most tranquil beaches, Cala Mondrago. Spend your evenings having a romantic seafood dinner overlooking a peaceful harbour in Puerto Portals or Port Andraxt. Do something unique and visit the salt flats in Ses Salines or take a daytrip to Cap de Formentor and take in the breath taking views that you will be sure to remember for a lifetime.

Malta is a small island nation that is known for its historic sites dating back to its succession of Roman, French, and British rulers, to name a few. As a result, it is home to many fortresses and impressive temples. As we mentioned in the start of this article, Game of Thrones was originally filmed in Mdina, Malta and it’s not difficult to see why. However, Malta is also surrounded by beautiful blue waters and its beaches are busy all summer.

What To Do

Being an island nation means you can see much or even all of the country during one stay. Valetta is the capital and is perfect for taking a stroll through and perhaps, is a good choice to make your base. You can explore the island’s forts and even visit Fort St Elmo in Valletta which overlooks the harbour. Travel back in time and visit Mdina, a successfully preserved walled city, with fascinating historic houses and palaces that is set on a hilltop in the north. It is pedestrian-friendly as little to no cars are allowed here and it is even nicknamed ‘The Silent City’ because of this. Another must see historic site is the Rotunda of Mosta, which was inspired by Rome’s Pantheon, and St John’s Co-Cathedral, in Valletta, which is deemed as one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings.

If the historical theme is not what you are interested in, relax on one of the many popular beaches in Malta; Ghajn Tuffieha and Golden Bay. Leave Malta to visit beautiful coves just off the coast of Comino – the picturesque Blue Lagoon is notably the country’s most popular spot to visit. Where there is sea, there is seafood to be eaten. Finish off your romantic day of swimming in the shimmering turquoise waters by returning back to Valletta and enjoying a freshly cooked seafood dinner.
